Too many "new" ideas in education turn out not so new beneath their lick of paint.
In general, the rhetorically clichéd implication that all of history -- right up to whatever moment of 'the present' is experienced -- comprises but of ignorance, cruelty and stupidity allows anyone speaking in the glorious name of common sense to demand the power to end that --merely implied -- darkness. A lot of argumentation in education is highly emotionalised in this way. The term "Child-Centred" unintentionally implies child neglect as its logical alternative. 'Positive Psychology' as a choice of words suggests that unkind psychology must be what it replaces. The label "Growth Mindset" creates the impression that other teachers wish to teach a constrained mindset.
Most of us can see the marketing puff in the terminology so that we dont get carried away by it, but nor do we get educated by it. To understand the present, with any depth or independence, you have to understand something about what went before. The answer is to read history -- hoping of course one can tell when that too is full of 'marketing puff'.
I recommend, to start with, the seminal classic, "The History of Pedagogy" by Gabriel Compayre, 1889, (translated by Payne, W.) and available free of charge, perfectly legally, by clicking here.
Then you can the modern story developed very capably in: Gillard D. (2018) Education in the UK: a history www.education-uk.org/history - click to visit

4th Edition, 2020, 381 pages
(The Third Edition is available as a 17 hour audiobook, but, especially as this book is somewhat more in the direction of a reference book anyway, I'm suggesting the print version. The 4th Ed's extra chapter and facts are good to have. Having said that the Audiobook 3rd Ed. is great, too).
